Academic Standing

(This page intended for MSU College of Engineering undergraduate students only.)

College of Engineering Academic Warnings

Engineering students are expected to maintain excellence in their academic pursuits.  Students admitted to the College will receive an academic warning at the end of each term in which a Term GPA of less than 2.00 is obtained.  A low cumulative GPA can have a negative impact on experiential education opportunities (co-ops, undergraduate research, internships, etc.) and job placement after graduation.

Academic Standing of Undergraduate Students

Students should be aware of the MSU policy on the Academic Standing of Undergraduate Students which details the requirements for remaining in good standing at MSU, as well as the consequences for poor academic performance.  Questions about academic standing should be directed to the student's advisor or the Director of Academic Advising.

Probation

Students will be placed on probation when they earn below a 2.00 cumulative GPA at the end of the term.  Holds can be placed at the discretion of student's academic advisor and/or the Director of Academic Advising.

We strongly recommend that students meet with their advisor regularly to receive assistance with major selection, schedule planning, test-taken and study skills, utilizing resources, career planning, and much more.

Recess

Per the ASUS policy, a student will be recessed when six or more credits of 0.0 grades or Incomplete grades ("I") are earned in a term.  A recessed student may not enroll at MSU again for at least one year and must complete an appeals process in order to re-enroll.  See your academic advisor for more information.

Dismiss/Repeats

Per the ASUS policy, students are to be dismissed when more than 21 credits have been repeated.  Students on warning for repeats may be required to see their academic advisor before enrolling for any subsequent semester.

Students who have been dismissed must remain out of school for at least two years.  After that period, a student may be readmitted only if a convincing case can be made to the associate dean of the admitting college that circumstances have changed so that there is a reasonable probability of success.  Students will be readmitted on probation, final probation, warning for repeats, or warning for lack of progress in the major as appropriate and specific conditions in writing will be imposed.

Not Eligible to Continue in Engineering

The College of Engineering has the right to remove any student who is not making sufficient progress toward their degree.  A student removed from the College of Engineering can pursue a major in an alternate college at MSU.
